Amar Sagar lake

The Amar Sagar lake is an oasis near the palace of Amar Singh. It is adjacent to the 17th-century citadel which was constructed by Maharawal Akhai Singh and is located on the outskirts of Jaisalmer city. Built in the pattern of apartments, the palace complex comprises of number wells and ponds along with chhatris. It is believed that these wells were constructed by prostitutes. Amar Singh was believed to be an ardent follower of Lord Shiva. Hence, an ancient Shiva temple made of marble was constructed in the 18th century. Although it is built in a pattern of apartments, the five-storey haveli is famous for its intricate murals.

There are a series of steps and a pavilion beside the palace that leads to the lake. At the far end of the lake, there is an aesthetically carved Jain temple that boasts its fine structure made of Jaisalmer stones. An exciting part of the lake is the stone carved figureheads which are believed to protect the royal family. 

On the outskirts of Western Jaisalmer, approximately 4 Km from Bada Bagh, lies Amar Sagar Lake. Beautiful and serene, a series of steps from the Amar Singh Palace leads you to the lake. The complex of the palace and lake comprise numerous wells and ponds along with an ancient Shiva temple. According to some local tales, these wells were built by the prostitutues. Figureheads of animals carved beautifully in stone surround the lake. The five storey haweli in the premises is famous for its intricate murals painted with delicate efforts. You get to see an aesthetically carved Jain temple at the far end of the lake. It boasts of a shining architecture adorned with Jaisalmeri stones. You can hire a cab or hail an autorickshaw to reach this attraction near Jaisalmer.

Amar Sagar Lake is situated 7 km from the western boundaries of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. It is a lake and oasis located next to the Amar Singh Palace which was made in the 17th century.

There are many figureheads of animals carved in stone that are believed to be protectors of the royal family, enclose the lake. On one side, pavilions with stairs leading down to the lake can be seen, while on the other side, there is a wonderful intricately carved Jain Temple. In Jaisalmer city, this is a unique site where visitors can spend time watching the sunrise or a sunset.

Amar Sagar Lake is a manmade lake dug up in 1367 by Raja Rawal Gadsi Singh. Given the fact that it is a vast water body, the engineering excellence shown by the makers is worth commending.

History

Amar Sagar Lake is one of the oldest water points in the city of Jaisalmer. It was long served as an oasis in the heart of this desrts region. Indeed, the lake was once the main reservoir of Jaisalmer, supplying the whole city with water. the lake complex also has the greatest testimony of Rajput architecture which is none other than the palace of amar singh. This grand palace was erected in the seventeenth century by Maharawal Akhai Singh as a tribute to his predecessors.
