Udai Sagar Lake

Famed for being one of the five celebrated lakes of Udaipur, Udai Sagar Lake is located in the eastern side of the city and owes its establishment to Maharana Udai Singh. Formerly built to supply sufficient amount of water to his land, this lake of Udai Sagar has been undertaken by the National Lake Conservation Program for the purpose of restoration.

Presently used as water supplier to the closely situated zinc smelter, Udai Sagar offers a commanding view of the evening silhouettes. A fresh water artificial lake near to Uday Sagar Lake is the serene lake of Pichola which was recently developed as one of the adjoining lakes and was basically developed to meet the water requirements of the area. Housing two islands on its embankments, this lake is adorned with sundry palaces that overlook the striking lake.

The famous Jagdish temple is Udaipur’s biggest temple that bears the constructive work of Indo-Aryan style and follows the logic of Vastushashtra besides topping the chart of must see places in Udaipur. Resting on the western side of the Pichola Lake, Arsi Villas is a beautiful island established by Maharaja Arsi Singh and beholds the heavenly sight of the evening sky besides being home to a multitude of migratory birds.

Udai Sagar Lake is built on Berach river, which is 13 kms from the Udaipur city. Udai Sagar Lake is surrounded by Aravali hill ranges. It is one of the five lakes in Udaipur city. Other lakes are Fatesh Sagar lake, Pichola lake, Jaimand lake and Rajasmand lake. The length of this beautiful lake is 4 km and width is 2.5 km. This Lake is 9 meters deep. Construction of the Lake started in 1559 and was completed by 1565. The lake is a result of a dam, which is built across Berach river. Udai Sagar Lake has plenty of water. People who visit the lakes, enjoy the serene water. One can reach this beautiful lake in Udaipur city, traveling by bus, taxi or rickshaw from the Udaypur city.

History

Udai Sagar Lake was built by Maharana Udai Singh during 1559-1565. He constructed dam on the Berach River to provide sufficient water supply to the people in the Udaipur. The dam has a storage capacity of 23.4 mili cubic meters and it covers 10.5 sq. kms area. One channel is always connected to the Berach river, in order to manage the overflowing of the dam during monsoon.

In 1573, Maharana Pratap Singh had declined the invitation by Kumwar Man Singh to meet the Akbar on the banks of Udai Sagar lake. This led to the Haldighati battle in 1576.

Attractions

City Palace is a tourist attraction in Udaipur city. It was built by Maharana Udai Singh in 1559 AD. It is situated on the banks of Pichola Lake, which is the biggest lake in Udaipur city.

The Jagdish temple is located in the middle of Udaipur. It is a large Hindu temple built by Maharana Jagat Singh in 1651 AD. It has a great work of art and architecture. Lake Fateh Sagar and Pichola lake are the tourist’s favorite places.

Best time to Visit

September to March is the ideal time to visit Udai Sagar Lake. Maximum temperature is 28 degrees Celsius and minimum is 11 degrees Celsius. During this time, the climate is pleasant and you can enjoy it with full glory.

In summer season, the temperature is very high, between 38 to 28 Degrees Celsius. Because of the high temperature, it is not preferable to visit Udai Sagar Lake during summer. During monsoon, there is heavy rainfall, which makes the climate humid. One cannot enjoy the beautiful places in Udaipur city during monsoon as well as summer. It will be better if you plan the trip to Udaipur in winters.

How to Reach

Udaipur is well connected to other major cities in India including Delhi, Ahmadabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, by air, rail and road.

By Air

The nearest airport is Udaipur airport, which is located near Dabok. It is known as Maharana Pratap airport, which is 22 kms from the Udaipur city. Frequent flights are available from Delhi and Mumbai.

By Rail

The Udaipur Railway station is the nearest railway station. Udaipur railway station is well connected to other cities like Jaipur, Delhi, Mumbai. There is a good frequency of trains from and to Udaipur, which connects it to major cities in the country.

By Road

The city lies on the national highway 8 between Mumbai and Delhi. Udaipur has a great road network, which connects the city to major locations in the country. Regular bus services are available from the Udaipur bus stand, which connects the city to other cities like Jaipur, Delhi, Indore, Ajmer, Ahmedabad. Ac coaches and deluxe buses are also available from Udaipur. You can hire a taxi or car to reach Udaipur.
